Ondo at 50: Aiyedatiwa Reflects on Progress and set vision

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa says Ondo State has recorded notable progress across key sectors since its creation five decades ago. According to him, the state’s journey reflects resilience, steady growth, and determination.

Ondo State came into existence on February 3, 1976, during the administration of former Head of State Murtala Mohammed.

During a press conference in Akure to mark the Golden Jubilee, Aiyedatiwa highlighted several milestones from the past 50 years. In particular, he pointed to progress in education, healthcare delivery, agriculture, industrialisation, infrastructure, and human capital development.

Five Decades of Growth

The governor noted that tertiary institutions in Ondo State have produced professionals who contribute nationally and internationally. In addition, he said the state’s strong agricultural base continues to support livelihoods and improve food security.

Meanwhile, urban centres have expanded steadily over the years. However, rural communities still play a crucial role in economic productivity, especially in agriculture and small enterprises.

“These achievements came despite economic downturns, population pressures, environmental challenges and evolving security concerns,” the governor said.

“Nevertheless, the Ondo spirit, defined by industry, intellect and perseverance, remains strong.”

Golden Jubilee Activities

The state government has planned several activities to mark the 50th anniversary. Specifically, the events will celebrate the intellectual, cultural and developmental identity of Ondo State.

Planned activities include:

  • Statewide interfaith thanksgiving services
  • A Golden Jubilee Lecture Series themed “Ondo State: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”
  • Cultural and historical exhibitions
  • A gala and awards night to honour excellence and service

Furthermore, the governor said the celebrations will highlight the state’s history and encourage renewed commitment to its future.

Governance and Development Agenda

Aiyedatiwa also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to people-centred governance. Therefore, his government continues to prioritise fiscal discipline, institutional efficiency and social inclusion.

At the same time, the administration is investing in road infrastructure, urban renewal and healthcare improvement. Similarly, it is advancing education reforms and strengthening agricultural value chains.

In addition, the government is working to diversify the state’s economy. To achieve this, it has expanded partnerships with the private sector and development institutions.

“Our goal is to translate policies into outcomes that improve the quality of life of our people,” the governor said. He added that this goal aligns with the ‘OUR EASE’ policy agenda.

Security and Economic Stability

The governor stressed that security remains central to development. Consequently, the government continues to collaborate with security agencies and community intelligence networks.

Through these efforts, authorities aim to protect lives, farmlands and investments across the state. As a result, many communities now enjoy improved stability that supports economic and agricultural activities.

Vision for the Next 50 Years

Looking ahead, Aiyedatiwa said the state must prioritise knowledge-driven growth and industrial competitiveness. At the same time, he emphasised environmental sustainability, digital innovation and strong democratic institutions.

“As we celebrate fifty years, our focus remains firmly on the future,” he said.

“We are building a state that will not only respond to change but also shape it. Ultimately, opportunity must remain inclusive and prosperity must remain sustainable.”

Honouring the Founding Fathers

Finally, the governor paid tribute to the founding fathers of the state, both living and deceased. According to him, their vision and sacrifices laid the foundation for Ondo’s development.

He mentioned the first civilian governor, Michael Adekunle Ajasin, nationalist leader Ayo Fasanmi, elder statesman Reuben Fasoranti, and respected statesman Seinde Arogbofa.

As Ondo marks its Golden Jubilee, the governor urged residents and stakeholders to support the celebration. In his view, the anniversary should serve as a moment of reflection, unity and renewed commitment to progress.
